Highest Vertical Jump: The Record Book

Highest Vertical Jump: The Record Book

Written by Zach

Topics: Jump Higher

The vertical jump is a true measure of athletic ability.  If you can jump high, you will be quick, powerful and strong.  So, who holds this record?  There’s a lot of rumors spread over the internet, so I did the research.  The table below is the most complete list on the internet with vertical jump records for the top NBA players and other athletes.

What is the record for highest vertical jump?

56 inches.

Who has the highest vertical jump ever recorded?

Two jumpers have reached this incredible height, Kadour Ziani of Slam Nation and Reggie Thompson of JumpUSA.  There are reports of Kadour Ziani jumping 60″, but so far this record is unconfirmed.  I suspect that is his record for running vertical jump.

With an average vertical jump of 28 inches in the NBA, it’s tough to stand out.  Michael Jordan is one of the best with a vertical jump of 48 inches.  LeBron James is not too far behind with a vertical of 44 inches.  3-time Slam Dunk Contest winner Nate Robinson boasts a vertical of 43.5 inches.

How often should i jump if im training to increase my vert? is everyday ok, just not for over 30 min?

    • Zach says:

      Hi Shaun,

If all you’re doing is jumping, you probably won’t make much progress improving your vertical. Unless you can squat 1.5x your body weight, I recommend doing 3 sets of 5 squats and 3 sets of 8 glute ham raises twice a week. Once you start making progress and squatting heavier, you will be able to jump higher.

As part of your squat warmup, I would jump 10-20 times as high as you can at a target. You can practice jumping 1 or 2 more times a week depending on how quickly you recover from lifting. Just make sure not to over do it!

I can jump over 2 story building and have done so since I was 10. I can also pee from one side of the highway to the other.

  2. andrew says:

is this taken from a standing or running vertical

  3. Prav says:

Hey Zach, check out James White. I wanna know his vertical.. And are you sure blake Griffin’s vert is 37.5″ ? seems much higher than that..

    • Zach says:

Thanks for leaving a comment Prav! I don’t know how I left James White off this list. First a few interesting facts about White. In 2001 this D League player dunked through the legs from the free throw line. He also qualified for the Olympic trials with a high jump of 7′ 4″ and a long jump of 25′ 7″ without training. He also claims to be able to touch the top of the backboard, and is only 6′ 9″ tall. James White’s official standing vertical leap is 46 inches.

Blake Griffin’s NBA combine results showed his standing vertical jump at 35.5″. He has been recorded at a 37.5″ standing vertical leap. His running vert is of course much higher than that.

      • Prav says:

Alright, thanks! I’m hard-pressed to find footage of reggie thompson, so I was wondering if you have any interesting links.

Oh and what’s T-Dub’s vert? (Team Flight Brothers)

        Thanks again

        • Zach says:

Sorry, I don’t have any vids of Reggie.

I couldn’t find anything offical on T Dub, but there are reports of him having a 55″ vertical leap. I would assume this is a running vertical, which is just fine since you run before you dunk!

          • ATL says:

I assume it’s his max vertical, so then it’s he running and then take off from two legs.

I had a twin brother that had his head chin level over the basket. His head was about 13 inches over the rim. He did this while playing against our dad in a basketball gym about 12 years ago. My brother grabbed the rebound and went straight back up. His head went 13 inches over the basket. He layed the ball in the hoop instead because his head was past the basket. It was the most amazing thing I ever saw because I SAW IT WITH MY OWN EYES. This was a standing vertical because he did this without running first. This this when my twin brother was 16 years old at the time. Me and our our dad was amazed by it so we told him running vertical and he basically jumped 8 inches higher. His head was about 21 inches above the basket. Our dad measured his vertical afterward. At that time, my twin brother was 5’3 and had a standing reach of 6’10. HE COULD TOUCH 12’7 ON THE BACKboard while just standing first and he could touch 13’3 on the backboard while doing a running vertical. My twin brother standing vertical was 69 inches and his running vertical was 77 inches. I would had video taped it back when he did thi amazing thing, but our mom and dad did not own a video camera at that time. It sucks though because I want all of you people to see this amazing thing for yourself you people would be amazed by it as well. My twin brother is now 28 years old and is 5’8 now. It is very much possible to jump that high because my twin brother did it a while back while witnessing it and it was amazing to see. We never videotaped him doing it his name is not on the very top of this chart plus we never told Guininess Book of World Records about it. I just had to tell yah that it is possible jump that high.

My Twin brother is now 5’8. His name is Terrance Harvey. He was very athletic and still is. He is a great basketball player. Always has been, but he is currently doing something else right now. He could easily get INTO THE NBA easily and dominate. He just had surgery 2 years ago. My brother never played high school basketball or college basketball because he had a very bad injury but never went into surgery for it because he decided not to at the time. Alot of people resemble him to Michael Jordan back then while playing in the gym and still do He is a person that can easily be better than Mj if he decides to play basketball again. Thats all I have to say about my twin brother.

  6. Judson Gordy says:

    Drew Brees – 34 inch

  7. Brian says:

I don’t believe any of these numbers unless they are documented by an official measurement, such as a draft combine. Many of them seem impossibly high. For example, Scottie Pippen is 6’7″ tall (or 79 inches). If he could really leap 48″ he would be able to get his head 7″ inches above the rim (79 + 48 = 127). That’s basically chin level. I’ve never seen Scottie get even close to that high with a running start, let alone flat footed. I’d buy a 40 inch vertical for Scottie, but not 48. Same thing goes for Darrell Griffith and Gerald Green. I never saw either of those guys get his head above the rim. I’ve seen MJ do it, but never chin level. He probably had a 45 inch vertical.

Go to draftexpress.com to see the official vertical measurements of most NBA draft picks for the last ten years. None of them have a standing vertical of greater than 40 inches, and very few have a running vertical that high.

    • ATL says:

Don’t forget that those draft combine results are when they are young. Rose got like 40″ when he came to NBA, nowdays like 50″.
Also I think Brown got about 50″ nowdays.

    • pillson says:

I think Brian might need to watch the highlights from the nets game today if he thinks Gerald Green can’t get his head above the rim…just saying.

    • Matt says:

I agree with Brian. Some of these scores are bogus. I also have to say David Thompson was the greatest dunker/leaper who ever lived and one of the best players. I will agree Griffin is up there though. I have yet to see anyone beat the 44 inch vertical Thompson did back in the 70s.

  8. larry says:

What about Larry Bird? He could jump like nobody!

  9. Larry says:

By the way anything claimed to be higher than 44-48 is very doubtful!

    • Rusty says:

@Larry I completely agree. This list is a pile of crap. The “research” he did was to look at a bunch of unsubstantiated blog posts, just like this one, and pick the largest numbers he could find. I’ve trained with elite volleyball players for years and have access to world-class trainers. I’ve never heard of anyone jumping over 50 inches. And even then that’s pushing reality.

  10. Tyler says:

I hear from people that Calvin Johnson(Detroit Lions WR) has a 48″ vertical. Is this true?

Also, im 14 and have 19″standing vertical. Im only 5’2″ but i can touch almost any basketball net with a running jump(23.5″). Im about to start using the Jump Manual. Do you think I could dunk eventually?

  20. By DEFINITION, A Verticaljump is the attained height from above… If a standing or one step leap or run is the method ( it varies the approach vs result from the technique) the explosion of force maximized is limited from a flatfooted leap/ the one step has optimal return / yet the running broadjump ala Bob Beamonish longjump will utilize a great deal of generated lift and a perigee of arc toward the desired target and therefore ensure the greatest of any mark measured… the true test is flatfoot reach and verticaljump marked and subtract the difference/ie.6’2″ HEIGHT with 8′ FLATFOOT REACH, JUMPS 11’6″/ SUBTRACTED = 44″ VERTICAL JUMP BY VALID STANDARDS!!!

  21. THE key to any Verticaljump is the standing reach of the individual vs the height of the Target. In theory IF “Superman” aka Kal El, UNTIL he wins 4 (four) titles, has a standstill reach of 9’6″ , When he jumps 12’6′… he legitimately measures a 36″ leap and the illusion is his height isn’t taken into consideration or his flatfoot reach…don’t discount those factors EVER

  22. the lack of Baggage as Spud Webb carried onto his frame in weight vs Barkley’s frame makes for a dispute into whom wa most amazing…Barkley had a hundred pounds and a 12″ height variable, and jumped a foot higher than WEBB… James White’s lack of weight onto his frame allows for his frame and muscular-skeleton activity to combine for a MOST unique exhibition of potential Olympic proportion activity. He rivals Carl Lewis and Bob Beamon both in length of his aerial assaults, and is UNCHALLENGED in his marks above the RIM being documented without trick angled video to disguise the legit /// “White”…Man CAN Jump

  23. At a legit 6’7″ JAMES WHITE has a reach of maybe 8’6″ max…Now view the TOP OF THE BACKBOARD jump and see he WAS an inch of two short…For GENEROSITY sake and conditions Let’s say HE did touch it and the MATH says he has a vertical leap of 13′ attained and minus the 8’6″ reach for 13×12=156″ / 156″(BB) – 102″(R)= 54″ VERTICAL WHITE IS THE ONLY 50″ lEAPER TO APPROACH DOCUMENTATION AS LEGIT AND uRBAN lEGENDS BE Damnned. AS they said in the “MATRIX”… He is THE ONE / all else fight for 2nd place

  24. Photo angle and height DO MATTER…the area halfway above the white square and the top of the backboard is reserved for Athletes

I’m not convinced by many of these number Ziani jumped 56 inches in a standing jump? I’ve yet to see a video with a good angle of the top of his head breaking the plane of the rim. 28. Thomas says:

Out of curiosity, where did you get the number for GSP? 48″ seems a bit high, I’d be very surprised if he has a vertical as high as MJ. Then again, stanger things have happened. But would be interested in knowing the source of the number.

    • My name is Fook Mi and my co-joined twin brother Fook Yu has a 70″ vertical… he throws me into the air prior to leaping, this causes potential energy to aid in his momentum. Sometimes, it hurts real bad, when I land on the ground, but my brother’s dream is to play in the CBA (Circus Basketball Association). His main competition is the bearded lady though, she is a really tough defender and D’s-up hard. Maybe our brothers can play together one day, imagine how high the verticals would be if they jumped off each others’ shoulders. It would be completely without contestation. If you go to http://www.fookmiyu.com/70“vertvideo you can watch Fook Yu fly thru the air.

      • WOW THIS IS SO WEIRD!!! I also have a brother that has a 70″ vertical! His name is Klondike Remmington Witherbee IX. He was so athletic and tremendous at basketball that people greater than basketball scouts were looking at him. Ever heard of Professor Charles Xavier? Yeah that Charles Xavier. He was recruiting my brother for the XMEN. That is how good he was. I know this sounds implausible but believe this is real. Oh yeah also he can bench press 800lbs.

  47. Stan the man says:

All these values of vert. jump are BS and I will prove it to you.
There is a very simple way to measure the vertical in any video, assuming the camera angle is right.
    So let’s go:
    - The basket rim is in 10 feet hight (or 120 inches).
    - Substract the players hight
    - Substract the difference between the top of the players head and the rim (at the highest point of a dunk)
= you get the real vert.

For example – Michael Jordan is 6’5″ = 77″. Usually his head is about 10″ below the rim on a good dunk. Therefore his vertical is 120″-77″-10″ = 33″. Of course he can put another 5” when he tries very hard, so I would say MJ is 38” with a ball. On top of it he could add another 2-4 inches when he doesn’t need to jump with a ball so his max is 42”.

Now where come those BS figures in the table from?
Easy explanation. They are coming from standing reach being substracted from the height they can touch in a jump.
The problem is, that the standing reach is not very reliable variable, because people stretch themselves much more in a jump then they do when standing calm on the ground. You can easily make 10-12” difference in standing reach between really stretching yourself and just raising your hand above your head.
